Entre las principales funciones de un museo, una de las fundamentales es ir conformando y ampliando, día a día, una colección de obras que de alguna manera le den fisonomía propia, coherente pero muy abierta, a la institución que las colecciona.

Para realizar esta labor, es necesario mantener una constante búsqueda que funcione como registro y memoria a la vez, de lo que ha venido aconteciendo en un pasado reciente, pero que de cuenta, paralelamente, de las transformaciones que tienen lugar en los complejos, muy variables aunque ricos contornos del panorama artístico contemporáneo de Costa Rica, la región centroamericana y sus crecientes vínculos con el arte internacional.

Por eso, para ir conformando de una manera sólida y a la vez arriesgada su colección, el MADC ha estado abierto a las investigaciones más audaces dentro del arte y el diseño más recientes, aunque también reconoce búsquedas sugerentes en el ámbito de los lenguajes más “tradicionales”.

En ese sentido, el MADC ha coleccionado obras que van desde las técnicas vinculadas a la pintura, la escultura, el grabado, el dibujo, u otras propuestas de lenguajes históricos; y paralelamente ha adquirido objetos, instalaciones, fotografías, así como obras audiovisuales y digitales, cercanas a soportes más tecnológicos y virtuales.

Todas estas obras se exhiben sistemáticamente cada año en las salas del museo, a través de muestras temporales que establecen relaciones entre técnicas y lenguajes, o exploraciones conceptuales y temáticas diversas.

En ese ámbito la labor del MADC estimula constantemente la producción artística más novedosa, favoreciendo la visibilización de artistas y obras aun no totalmente reconocidas; aunque también atrayendo a su colección obras de artistas prestigiosos y reconocidos, tanto en los ámbitos del arte y el diseño contemporáneo nacional, como regional e internacional.

Con esa labor de colección y exhibición, el MADC cumple con una de sus principales funciones: conservar, visibilizar y poner a interactuar las obras de artistas y diseñadores actuales tanto nacionales e internacionales, lo cual convierte al museo no solo en uno de los espacios de mayor prestigio expositivo en la región centroamericana, sino de investigación y apoyo constantes a ese arte y diseño contemporáneo, que en algún momento formarán parte de la historia, del patrimonio, de la memoria de nuestras culturas.

MADC’s Permanent Collection

One of the key roles of a museum is to gradually build up and expand a collection of works that, in one way or another, embody a coherent and highly comprehensive profile of that particular institution.

This task requires continuous research that no only records and chronicles events in the recent past, but also simultaneously accounts for the transformations that occur in the complex and highly variable wealth of perspectives within the contemporary art scene in Costa Rica, the Central American region and its growing ties with the international art world.

Thus, with the aim of creating a both solid and bold collection, the MADC has proved itself open to the most audacious research in cutting-edge art and design, whilst also acknowledging thought-provoking research within the field of more "traditional" artistic expressions.

In this sense, the MADC has built up a collection of works ranging from techniques related to painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, or other proposals employing techniques that are more traditional from a historical point of view, whilst, at the same time, acquiring objects, installations, photographs, and audiovisual and digital pieces based on more technological and virtual formats.

All these works are systematically exhibited each year throughout the museum halls intemporary exhibitions that establish links between art techniques and languages, or conceptual research and wide-ranging themes.

In this regard, the MADC constantly encourages the most innovative artistic production, preferring to showcase lesser-known artists and make their work more visible; but it also attracts the work of renowned and established artists to its collection, in the field of both contemporary art and design at the national, regional and international level.

This task of collecting and exhibiting means the MADC is fulfilling one of its main roles which is to conserve, make visible and confront the works of present-day national and international artists and designers, thus making the museum not only one of the most prestigious exhibition spaces in Central America, but one of constant research and support for contemporary art and design, which at some point will become part of the history, heritage and legacy of our cultures.
