What do we do?
El Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, fundado en 1994, es “un espacio abierto y múltiple”. Para cumplir con esta ambiciosa idea, difundimos y promovemos de manera permanente las tendencias más recientes y dinámicas del arte y el diseño contemporáneos dentro de la región centroamericana, así como sus vínculos con el ámbito latinoamericano e internacional.
The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, founded in 1994, is an “open multiple space”. To comply with this ambitious idea, we define and promote, in a permanent way, the most recent tendencies and dynamics in the world of contemporary art and design throughout the Central American region, thus reinforcing their links within the Latin American and International context.

What spaces do we offer?
MADC has four exhibit galleries and an exterior exhibit space: Pila de la Melaza / the Molasses Vault, that is used for diverse multidisciplinary events (among others, performances, installations and music,) The museum also offer a video-library and documentation centre, where one can consult a grand array of audiovisual materials by Central American and international artists. These include video-art, documentaries about exhibits and performances. The library also hosts a wide range of art catalogues, art books and contemporary design books, which have been produced by the museum and other institutions.

What type of exhibits do we organise?
Desde su fundación, el MADC ha realizado una gran cantidad de muestras individuales y colectivas de artistas nacionales e internacionales, y uno de sus principales objetivos es exponer visiones artísticas y curatoriales relacionadas con problemas estéticos, culturales y sociales que afectan a la región centroamericana y al resto del mundo. Igualmente, el museo promueve la realización de concursos y muestras de videocreación, arte digital, artistas emergentes, entre otras, que contribuyen a visibilizar y dar legitimidad a las tendencias más novedosas dentro del arte y el diseño contemporáneos en la región centroamericana.
Since its founding, MADC has carried out a great quantity of individual and collective exhibits by national and international artists. One of the principal objectives is to exhibit artists and curatorial visions related with aesthetic, cultural and social issues which affect the Central American region and the world. Equally the museum promotes the implementation of art competitions, and supports video-creation shows, digital art, emerging artists, among others, that contribute to the visibility and legitimise the most recent tendencies within contemporary art and design in the Central American region.

What other type of events do we carry out?
MADC has permanent parallel programs of activities which include: A programmed series of talks and round table discussions about the museum’s exhibits A series of film and video, interactions between artists and the public in public spaces (En la Calle ) and diverse multidisciplinary proposals that incorporate, for example, performance, video, and music.
How do we educate?
In addition to the exhibits and parallel activities, MADC provides permanent guided tour services of the galleries and offers consultation services of its audiovisual materials and bibliographies in the Video-Library and Documentation Centre. Running along side these activities and services a program is undertaken in workshops and meetings between the public, artists and designers.

MADC has a website, that offers wide and complete information about our spaces and principle events: Previous, present and future exhibits, parallel programs of activities, images and data about our permanent collection, art brochures and catalogues, videos about the museum’s exhibits, podcast interviews with artists and curators, seminars, information and images concerning the main national artists, institutions, and contexts from Central America and in relation to contemporary art.

What art works do we collect?
The permanent collection boasts an important patrimony of Central American contemporary art, with renowned Costa Rican, Central American and international artists. These include a mixture of techniques and art languages: from painting, etching, drawing and sculpture to photography, installation, the intervened object and video.

How are we structured?
In order to carry out exhibits and other diverse events, MADC is formed by personnel in the management areas of curatorial work, museografic concerns, mass communication, design, education, exhibit mounting, administration, reception, gallery guides and guards and general services, that together with the Administrative Committee, the Pro-MADC Foundation and curators, guarantee professional and efficient attention to the artists that exhibit with us and the public that visits us.
Where are we?
The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC) is situated on the former site of the old national liquor factory, founded in 1856. This site is situated in a historical zone of downtown San Jose and it is valued as one of the most important architectural and heritage sites in Costa Rica. After a radical restoration at the beginning of the nineties, the old FANAL (National Liquor Factory) was converted into the National Cultural Centre (CENAC) which is part of the National Ministry of Culture and Youth
